Barbara Jean Butler Hunter entered the world on August 15, 1950, in Durham, North Carolina, to Leroy and Janie Sue Butler, as the fourth of six siblings. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Duke Hospice-Hock Family Pavilion. Barbara received her education through the Durham Public School System. Following her schooling, she pursued a career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), where her innate desire to care for others blossomed. Her dedication to elderly patients brought immense joy to their lives, with one family even attributing her compassionate care to extending their loved ones life by four years. Despite not having children of her own, Barbara became a nurturing presence to numerous children, both within her family and in her community. Known for her hospitality, Barbara never hesitated to share her thoughts or lend a helping hand when needed.
Barbara became an active member of Saint Mark AME Zion Church in Durham, NC at a young age, finding fulfillment in participating in the ensemble choir and the White Rose Circle. Her union with Paul Hunter, whom she met in her youth, was marked by an unbreakable bond and adventurous companionship. Together, they shared a love that knew no bounds, always by each others side.
Barbara's legacy will be forever cherished for her infectious joy, her talent for bringing laughter and warmth to those around her, and her skill in nurturing both young and old. Her kitchen was a place of gathering and delight, where family and friends were treated to her exquisite home-cooked meals. Renowned for her yeast rolls, cornbread, macaroni and cheese, and a variety of other dishes, Barbara's culinary creations brought people together, leaving them with full hearts and satisfied smiles. Her memory lives on in the hearts of those she touched with her kindness and generosity. Through the grace of God, Barbara found the strength and ability to accomplish all of the aforementioned tasks and endeavors.
Barbara will forever hold a cherished place in the hearts of her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Janie Sue and Leroy Butler, as well as her sisters, Joan Butler Holman, Ruby Lee Butler, and Patricia King; brothers, Michael Gary Butler, and Thomas Butler, and her loving nephews Clarence Butler and Dwight (Pete) Butler.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Paul Hunter, stepchildren Paula Hunter and Paulette Hunter, step-granddaughters, Audrina Styles and Arianna Styles, her sisters. Brenda Butler Mack and Katrina King Williams, and brother James King (Helen). Brothers-in-law’s, Michael Hunter (Linda), Ronald Hunter (Mary Lee), and Walter Hunter (Audry). Her niece Michelle Butler, nephews William D. Mack, Jr., Michael Gary Butler Jr., and Timothy McKinnon (Tiffany). She leaves behind a host of relatives and friends who will continue to honor her memory.
